Damn the wife was cunning. She pinned the stolen money on the girlfriend of the man who was supposed to help extend her husband's life. In the end, she got rid of the husband while escaping the blame of stolen money. I wonder, if she even got some additional money with any possible insurance policies he had. Very calculated.

Even if you simply backed out of donating at the last minute for another reason, you are NTA. While being a living donor is a wonderful thing, it is still always your body, your choice. Nobody should feel guilty for not giving any part of their body away. I have a friend who was going to donate and had to back out because the recovery period was so long and she couldn’t afford it (FMLA protects your job but is unpaid).

My take: 1) He said they were friends, but instead of speaking to them privately of the accusation, he involved the police immediately. No warning. 2) Even if she was indeed stealing, no job is worth my life so I would just quit after the transplant (assuming he's just a boss and not the owner).

This is an altered version of a story from years ago. In the original, OP was not guilt ridden. Just asked if he was TA because of the hate from the family if the dead boss. That version included him and his family begging him to do the transplant anyway, even offering to drop the charges. In that original story, something happened that made the boss panic, believing his theft of the money was going to be revealed. OP's wife was the only one who touched the money other than him.
