i just came out of a relationship similar to yours, where my ex is in an ivy league while i’m in what’s considered one of the “worst” universities in the country. throughout our relationship, i was genuinely inspired by his drive, the prestige of his education and the people he surrounded himself with, and it actually motivated me to work harder and pour more into myself too.
however, differences in education and perceived social status slowly became a huge issue for him. over time, he started seeing my path as beneath his. by the end, he was telling me he was embarrassed to be with me, that i wasn’t smart or ambitious enough, that i had “no future,” and even compared our relationship to a failed investment before leaving as he entered university.
one of my biggest takeaways is definitely to keep investing in myself and my own growth, something i did learn from watching how much he poured into his. but i’d be lying if i said the way he treated me and ended things didn’t also leave me somewhat traumatised. i think i also learnt not to conflate prestige with character. someone can be highly educated, accomplished and surrounded by equally “prestigious” people, and still be incredibly narrow-minded in how they measure another person’s worth.
