@goodvibesnurtribe: Watching Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad answer questions can be viewed not only through the lens of politics, but also through the lens of tasawwuf...the discipline of observing the self. In the Sufi path, the first question is not always: “Was he right or wrong?” Sometimes the deeper question is: “What did I observe within myself while listening?” Did anger arise? Admiration? Judgment? The desire to prove someone wrong? The urge to defend someone simply because we admire them? This is where an ordinary political clip can unexpectedly become a small exercise in muraqabah...watching the movements of our own heart. There is also something to learn from Tun Dr. Mahathir’s composure. Remaining calm when questioned can demonstrate discipline. Yet tasawwuf reminds us that outward calmness is only one layer. The deeper work concerns sidq.. truthfulness and the purification of intention. A person may speak beautifully and still avoid the heart of a question. Another may speak imperfectly yet carry sincerity. Only Allah fully knows what lies within the hearts. So we should be careful not to claim knowledge of another person's intention. The Qur’an teaches: “O you who believe, fear Allah and be with those who are truthful.” — Qur’an 9:119 Tasawwuf therefore teaches us something more demanding than merely judging public figures: Listen without becoming blind. Question without becoming arrogant. Disagree without hatred. Admire without idolising. Speak truth without allowing the nafs to turn truth into a weapon. A Sufi does not have to surrender critical thinking. In fact, tazkiyat al-nafs should make our observation clearer because we are constantly asking whether our judgment comes from truth or from ego, attachment, anger, fear and personal bias. We can respect the experience and intelligence of Tun Dr. Mahathir without believing that every answer must be correct. We can question him without insulting him. We can learn from him without turning a human being into something beyond human. Because ultimately, leaders will come and go. Names will enter history. Power will change hands. But every soul will eventually stand before Allah without titles, applause, followers or political position. So perhaps the deepest lesson is not merely: “Did Tun answer the question?” Perhaps another question should quietly follow: “When Allah questions me about my own life, what answer will I bring?” That question belongs to all of us.
