I've worked in data centers across the country, and a lot of public discussion treats them as though they all operate the same way. They don't.
Water use varies enormously by cooling design. Some facilities use evaporative cooling and can consume substantial amounts of water; others use air-cooled or closed-loop liquid systems with much lower onsite consumption. Liquid cooling may use water or water/glycol mixtures in closed loops, rather than continuously consuming fresh water. Water use is therefore a legitimate local concern, but it should be evaluated facility by facility rather than generalized across the entire industry.
The same applies to noise. Cooling equipment, chillers, transformers, and fans can create continuous noise, while backup-generator testing creates louder intermittent noise. The actual impact depends heavily on equipment, setbacks, barriers, and surrounding land use.
Power is probably the more significant concern. Modern hyperscale facilities can represent tens or hundreds of megawatts of load, and utilities increasingly have special interconnection studies, tariffs, contracts, and infrastructure requirements for them. They cannot simply connect unlimited load to an existing grid, but large projects absolutely can require new generation or transmission capacity. Their relatively steady 24/7 demand can improve utilization of generation assets, but that does not eliminate the infrastructure cost.
Onsite solar generally cannot supply a large data center continuously without enormous land and storage requirements, although operators can and do procure renewable generation elsewhere.
My bigger concern is siting. Building a data center in an established industrial area with existing power and fiber infrastructure is very different from dropping a hyperscale campus into a rural community that lacks the electrical, water, transportation, and acoustic infrastructure to support it. The impacts should be judged by the actual facility and location, not blanket claims about all data centers.
