What people don’t understand about New Orleans is that we are a big old blended family. We are a Gumbo pot. We don’t care what race we are. We don’t care what we identify as we don’t care if we love people that look just like us we just love to have fun. This is a fun city. Call it trashy call it dirty but we have the best people here and we all get along and we all get drunk together and we party and we have fun.

I think ppl also don’t understand the significance of the impact Katrina had on the city. The amount of ppl it permanently displaced, local businesses shattered, whole neighborhoods and communities that never recovered.

as a black person i felt all thought all those things and went to the parks and lake and everything. rode the st Charles Street car walked the garden district m took a boat ride on the river. it just seemed the city itself didn't put much into what it has. and I'm talking about on a government level. the sidewalks are a mess, the streets are a mess even the historic houses we saw that were beautiful and amazing and supposedly protected by the city were also falling apart when you got close to them. I found it incredibly sad because there was so much poverty and with the amount of black people I saw there I truly couldn't understand why Andrew Jackson is still positive political figure in that city. my mind is blown that he is all over everything and considered a hero like that's insane so seeing that made me feel like the black people there are just working to survive. I don't know if they're thriving enough to notice that they have such oppressive racial figures surrounding them all the time. I have family there and they're doing very well though their homes were beautiful their neighborhoods were clean and quiet their kids are amazing. but when traveling through the city in general I just saw a lot of struggle. that didn't sit too well with me. I know that's not the only portion of New Orleans but when you consider French Quarter is the thing that draws people in wouldn't you want to put your best foot forward and truly take care of the French quarter? It has so much history but it's turned into just a party place while the history is fading away. That was another sad part. the history is being forgotten and not celebrated and commercialism has taken over. The city officials need to do better plain and simple
