Hip checks are great unfortunately this is called clipping and is a penalty you can’t hit below the other players hips he went mid thigh

Hip checks are the best. Clean, effective, doesn't hurt. Hurts the pride, the kicker. The best hip check I experienced was on me, not one I dished out and that pisses me off, but good on him. Textbook timing.

it's not an illegal hit in the NHL it is a perfectly legal hit and it is a treat to watch when executed perfectly but it is also very dangerous for the opposing player that is getting hip checked it's not that it is a lost art it's just that most players that know how to throw this hip check also know the catastrophic effects it can have on the player receiving said hip check it's more of a respect thing and not wanting to end someone else's career yes they still get thrown but if you look closely the only hip checks that are getting thrown are the ones that are very clean flips the player completely before he hits the ice
