Chitting potatoes 💚 🌱 What is it? Chitting potatoes is the practice of encouraging your seed potatoes to sprout before planting. 🌱 Why do it? Chitting can be beneficial for potatoes that are planting when the soil is still cold - in March & April. So this usually applies to first and second earlies. Chitting potatoes gives your potatoes a head start, so that when they go into the cold ground they have already started growing. This can bring forward your harvests slightly, and it makes your potatoes less likely to rot in the cold, wet soil. 🌱 How? To chit your potatoes, put them into an egg box or a tray with the side with the most eyes facing up. Put them in a cool but frost-free place for a few weeks. A windowsill is ideal. Frost-free is important because the frost can damage your spuds. Light is important otherwise you’ll get very leggy shoots coming from your potatoes. 🌱 When? January and February is ideal, for March and April plantings. 🌱 Other info: chitting isn’t essential, but it can be beneficial for the reasons above. Once you get to May plantings, it’s not really necessary as the potatoes will be going into warm soil. #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets
