Uganda National Mosque 🕌 🇺🇬 Situated within Old Kampala Hill, this is the largest mosque in Uganda and in East Africa, and one of the seven hills in the Kampala City. As a tourist you get to experience the history, beautiful architectural designs and you get to clib 272 steps of the impressive 50.5-meter minaret which offers panoramic views of the seven wonders of Kampala. Some history we learnt: The construction of the mosque started in the 1970s under the rulership of Idi Amin and was later completed with funding by the Libyan Leader: the late Muammar Gaddafi in 2017. (Hence it was previously known as the Gaddafi mosque). Gorgeous architecture: Different parts of the mosque offer beautiful architectural designs influenced by the Arab, Western and African cultures (Moroccan, Egyptian, Zanzibar, Swahili and Ugandan elements) Who can visit: Everyone regardless of cultural, religious, ethnic or political allegiances. However as Christians, we excused ourselves from the prayers. Tips for tourists: -Dress modestly (covering knees and shoulders). If you do not have a scarf for the head as a woman, you will be provided with upon paying. -There is a tour guide who will take you through different parts of the mosque, explaining in detail the history, architectural design and showing you notable landmarks at the top of the minaret- to have a full experience: Choose arrival time wisely. -They offer cashless service for the entrance fee but do carry cash to tip the tour guide. #kampalauganda #ugandanationalmosque #gaddafimosque #travelandpurpose #uganda
