What is a BATTERY CAGE SYSTEM? Let's learn 🐔 Many people see the cages but don't understand how the system works. Here is a simple breakdown: A battery cage system is a housing system where layers are kept in small groups in wire cages arranged in tiers (one above the other). HOW IT WORKS: 1. THE CAGE Made from galvanized wire. It has a slightly sloped floor so that when a hen lays, the egg gently rolls out onto a collection tray. This keeps the egg away from manure. 2. FEEDING & WATER Feed troughs are outside the cage. Hens put their heads through to eat. Water comes through nipple drinkers inside the cage, so water stays clean. 3. MANURE MANAGEMENT Manure falls through the wire floor to a pit or belt below. It does not stay with the birds or the eggs. This makes cleaning easier and helps keep the house drier. 4. THE HOUSE AROUND IT For cages to work well, the house must be built correctly - good ventilation for fresh air, strong floor to carry the weight of cages, and enough light. WHAT FARMERS LIKE ABOUT IT: • Uses vertical space well - you build up, not just out • Eggs are cleaner because they don't touch litter or manure • Less feed waste because feed is in a trough • Easier to monitor birds cage by cage • Daily tasks like egg collection and manure removal are more organized WHAT IT REQUIRES: It needs proper daily management. It also costs more to set up than deep litter. And because birds have limited movement compared to deep litter or free-range, good management and welfare must be taken seriously. When managed well, this is why many commercial egg farmers choose it for its efficiency and organization. This is the system you see in the picture - a house engineered specifically to carry cages.
