@thesameerproject: Patients living with debilitating, chronic illnesses cannot take one course of medication and recover. Their conditions require continuous treatment, monitoring, and support - and when that support disappears, their health can deteriorate quickly. In Gaza, displacement, inadequate nutrition, lack of clean water, extreme stress, and limited access to medication are making already serious chronic conditions even harder to manage. Because of our financial constraints, The Sameer Project has had to stop taking on individual medical cases. But there are patients we have supported in the past who are depending on us, and we cannot simply abandon the commitments we have already made. Sadiqa and Kareem are siblings living with thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder in which the body cannot produce enough healthy hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. This causes chronic anemia and, depending on its severity, can require lifelong medical care, medications, blood transfusions, and nutritional support. On August 4, The Sameer Project visited Sadiqa and Kareem with medications from our pharmacy, supplements and vitamins, and a fruit and vegetable parcel all costing less than $60 after 11% commission. But delivering the support directly to them is what helped these siblings the most. Here, Sadiqa speaks about what it means when this assistance stops.
