Behind this cute image lies a harsh reality: These cats give birth to at least 15 kittens a year. Around 12–13 of those kittens die from eye infections, accidents, attacks by other animals, starvation, cold, getting trapped somewhere, or choking on bones. Only about 2–3 of them survive to adulthood. While cats can live for up to 20 years when cared for in a home, cats living on the streets survive for only about five years. They are forced to eat spoiled or unhealthy food, struggle with internal and external parasites, are frequently poisoned, and sometimes have to fight other animals in potentially fatal encounters. In snowy, freezing weather, simply getting soaked can put them at risk of hypothermia and death. Because cats tend to hide signs of pain and suffering, people often assume that a cat that looks fine from the outside must be healthy. In reality, many of them suffer from dental and oral diseases as well as diseases affecting their internal organs. Because these animals are not spayed or neutered, they continue reproducing, and the cycle continues. There is something particularly strange about foreign content creators posting romanticised videos about “the cats of Istanbul” without knowing—or apparently even researching—the suffering behind those images, especially when many of these creators come from supposedly developed Western countries. If we look at the world from an anthropocentric perspective, we tend to see everything around us as decoration or entertainment for human beings. If we look at the same issue from the perspective of animal rights and animal welfare, however, we begin to see the scientific reality behind the charming images. So I have one request for John from the West who gets excited when he sees a cat on the streets of Istanbul: when you see one, don’t just take a cute photo or video. Take the cat to a veterinarian. Tell them it is a stray, and you can have it spayed or neutered at a reduced rate for around $100. Then return the cat to the place where you found it.
