Sayori Sayori is one of the main characters from Doki Doki Literature Club!. At first, she appears to be the typical cheerful childhood friend: clumsy, affectionate, energetic, and constantly smiling. The game intentionally presents her like a harmless anime dating-sim character to make the player feel comfortable. In reality, Sayori suffers from severe depression. She explains that her mind constantly feels heavy and empty at the same time. Simple things like getting out of bed, feeling happiness, or believing she deserves love become emotionally painful for her. She feels guilty for existing and believes she only causes problems for other people. One of the darkest parts of her character is that she hides everything behind forced happiness. She jokes around, acts playful, and tries to take care of everyone else so nobody notices how mentally exhausted she really is. When she finally speaks honestly about her condition, she admits that: she hates herself she feels undeserving of love even happy moments hurt her emotionally she thinks her sadness makes her selfish she is tired of pretending to be okay The horror of the game becomes stronger because the protagonist realizes too late that Sayori was already mentally collapsing long before anyone noticed. After that point, the game itself starts breaking apart: corrupted dialogue distorted music unsettling visuals characters acting unnaturally the feeling that the game is becoming “aware” of itself Sayori became one of the most remembered characters in psychological horror games because she represents a real and disturbing idea: someone can look like the happiest person in the room while silently falling apart inside.
