One of the first songs I taught myself to play on the guitar was Puff the Magic Dragon. A few chords, six strings and fingertips not yet tough enough for the work. I played until they hurt. Then I played until they hardened. That is how we learn to hold what once hurt us: carefully at first, then with strength. The song carried me to Honah Lee—a land of childhood wonder where dragons lived, paper boats sailed and imagination made everything possible. But beneath the magic was a lesson I would not understand until much later. Children grow up. They stop visiting. The dragon remembers. As a child, I heard the adventure. As a woman, I heard the abandonment. But the dragon’s fire never went out. Somewhere between Honah Lee and Honest Tracy Lee, I learned that growing older does not mean surrendering the child who could still see what others had forgotten. It means returning for her—with enough courage to hear the whole Song. Honah Lee taught Honest Tracy Lee how to find her own Song. Not the tune she was handed. Not the part she was told to play. Not the silence expected of her. Her Song. Puff got the smoke. I got the Gentle Fire. Not wildfire. Not hellfire. Hearth fire. The fire that warms a HOME, lights a lantern and gathers the wanderers around it. The fire that reveals without scorching and transforms without destroying. The fire tended by someone who knows what it means to be burned—and therefore refuses to burn others. That little guitar lesson became a life lesson. No one could place my fingers for me. No one could make the changes for me. No one could discover my Song but me. At first, every chord stood alone. With practice, the changes became music. With time, the music became memory. And eventually, what began as somebody else’s song helped me recognize the sound of my own voice. Perhaps that is what we are all doing here: Learning which strings belong to us. Finding the courage to make some noise. Turning pain into music and memory into meaning. I have been playing with fire ever since. Still learning. Still listening. Still tending the flame. I am Honest Tracy Lee, Honah’s cousin. Honah got the dragon. Honah got the smoke. I got the Song—and the Gentle Fire to sing it by. 😇🪽🔥 ⸻ Resonance: Puff the Magic Dragon — The Seekers Just Tracy, Just ’Cause. Parsimony • Clarity • Virtue. © 2026 Tracy Peressini.
