I understand it’s reality TV and they want ratings, but at the end of the day, you’re potentially damaging someone’s future ability to trust another person by deliberately placing them with an absolute twat. And this is where I genuinely start questioning the duty of care production owes contestants. At what point could this behaviour potentially cross into emotional abuse? And if production already knows what someone is like through the extensive casting and screening process, yet purposely pairs them with someone they know is emotionally mature and genuinely looking for love, should production carry some responsibility for what happens? Because it actually makes me want to look into tort law a little more 👀 Could a contestant potentially take action against production if they were knowingly placed in a situation where psychological or emotional harm was reasonably foreseeable? If production knowingly pairs a decent person with an imbecile, a twat, or someone who is clearly immature and problematic purely for entertainment, at what point does “making good television” potentially become a failure in their duty of care? My law-student brain has officially been activated because now I NEED to research this.
