@slimjan_: For over a century, one state company controlled every freight train in South Africa. In 2025, Transnet opened its rail network to private operators for the first time. 11 firms won slots across 41 routes, unlocking up to R100bn in investment. #SouthAfrica
Good luck with this, I think these private operators are going to get a huge surprise. The infrastructure are só deteriorated in places that running a predictable service is impossible. On top of that the theft and vandalism is so uncontrolled that the problem will not dissapear soon - not with our police force in any case. These private companies are not as big as Transnet and they will not be able to absorb the delays, like Transnet does - No government funds to rescue them. The government is trying to sell this as the solution to our rail system, but without them doing their part, this is going nowhere!
