Kit Harrington was the voice of Gilderoy in the audible full cast books. He was easy to slip in since he already had to deal with the backlash from being in the Audible remake

I would guess that they underestimated the backlash. They thought it would just be a small minority who created a bit of a fuss but it would die down and not materially impact his future career prospects. The fact that he pulled out says that they underestimated the backlash.
