A stray from the streets of Moscow, Laika was sent aboard Sputnik 2 in 1957, becoming the first living creature to orbit our planet. Her mission demonstrated that a mammal could survive the launch and conditions of spaceflight, helping pave the way for human spaceflight just four years later.
