Not because I didn’t love putting Riley to bed. I love the quiet cuddles. The sleepy little face. The moment the whole house finally goes quiet. But somewhere underneath all of that was this little voice in my head… How long will he sleep? How many times will I be awake tonight? Will I get enough sleep to function tomorrow? After enough broken nights, you start anticipating them. The baby is asleep, but you’re already thinking about the next wake up. You climb into bed tired, but your brain doesn’t switch off. You listen for every little noise. You check the time. You wonder whether it’s worth falling properly asleep because what if he’s awake again in twenty minutes? I don’t think people talk enough about that part. Broken sleep isn’t just being tired. It’s living in a constant state of anticipation. And lately, when I find myself lying there worrying about the night ahead, I look at the little lights. Mums everywhere. Some already asleep. Some just putting their babies down. Some feeding. Some rocking. Some probably wondering exactly what I’m wondering. How are we going to do this again tonight? And somehow, knowing I’m not the only one makes it feel a little less overwhelming. Because maybe tonight will be better. Maybe it won’t. Maybe Riley will surprise me and sleep for a long stretch. Maybe I’ll be awake more times than I can count. Either way, I’m going to take it one wake up at a time. I’m not going to spend the whole evening worrying about a night that hasn’t happened yet. And if I do end up awake at 3am… I know there will be other little lights on too. 💛 #newmom #momlife #postpartum #motherhood #momcommunity
