The flying machine is just kinda there, you're intended to search the supposed crash site but when you do there's no body and you can see tracks leading away from the device so your supposed to know he actually survives and does in fact go on to make more flying machines. I still don't think that's really worth it, but it's a cool reward for investigating further.
