She sat across from Charlotte. “Good morning.” “Good morning.” Engfa studied her face. “You seem different today.” Charlotte opened her folder. “I'm fine.” Engfa frowned slightly. “Are you sure?” “Yes.” “Good.” The meeting began. But something was different. Charlotte was unusually quiet. Engfa noticed. After twenty minutes, she finally asked, “Do you disagree with the proposal?” “No.” “Then why aren't you arguing?” Charlotte looked up. “Do you want me to?” Engfa smiled. “Actually, yes.” Charlotte couldn't help smiling. “Fine.” She pointed to the contract. “This clause is unacceptable.” Engfa leaned forward. “There you are.” Charlotte laughed softly. “What?” “I was wondering where you went.” For a moment, they stared at each other. Charlotte's smile slowly faded. So did Engfa's. Something passed between them. Something neither understood. Then P'Sun cleared his throat. “Should we continue?” They both looked away. “Yes,” Engfa said. After the meeting, Charlotte gathered her things. Before she left, Engfa stopped her. “Charlotte.” She turned. “Yes?” “The woman you saw earlier…” Charlotte's eyes widened. “I didn't ask.” “I know.” “Then why are you explaining?” Engfa smiled. “She was a client.” Charlotte froze. “I don't care.” “I didn't say you did.” Charlotte's cheeks warmed. She quickly looked away. “Good.” Engfa smiled. “Good.” Charlotte walked toward the door. Then she stopped. She turned back. “Engfa.” “Yes?” “Whoever she was…” Engfa raised an eyebrow. Charlotte hesitated. “Never mind.” She left. Engfa watched the door close. Then she smiled to herself. P'Sun looked at her. “You're smiling again.” Engfa shook her head. “I'm not.” “You are.” Engfa ignored him. But deep inside… she was beginning to understand something. Charlotte's reaction had mattered to her. More than it should have. Outside, Charlotte walked beside P'Cunay. P'Cunay looked at her. “Can I ask something?” “No.” “You're jealous.” Charlotte stopped. “I am not.” P'Cunay smiled. “Of course.” Charlotte continued walking. “I don't even like her.” P'Cunay nodded. “Of course.” Charlotte frowned. “Why do you keep saying that?” “Because you keep saying it.” Charlotte had no answer. She simply walked faster. But the tiny smile on her lips betrayed her. Because somewhere deep inside… she already knew. Something was beginning. Something neither she nor Engfa was ready to name.
