A child does not arrive in your home as a blank page. They arrive with a family, a culture, a language, a faith background, a history and sometimes a history of harm that started long before they were born.

SAMHSA's sixth principle asks caregivers and organizations to move "past cultural stereotypes and biases," to leverage "the healing value of traditional cultural connections," and to recognize and address historical trauma.

What that means practically:
1. Protect what's theirs: food, language, music, faith community, hair and skin care done right 
2. Provide care that responds to the child in front of you, including gender and identity 
3. Learn the family's story before you interpret the child's behavior

Loving a child does not require erasing where they came from. The most healing thing you can do is help them keep it.
