I was just saying this earlier, trauma literally causes both long term and short term brain fog. my theory is that it's the brain's way of blocking out the bad, painful, scary stuff. I survived childhood abuse from the entire familial unit, just to end up being tr@ffiked as an adult. It took people saying "hey it's not ok for people to treat you this way" and ask me about it. saying it out loud really was a gut punch because it affirmed what my brain keeps loopimg, and trying to understand, and believe, and blocking out all at once. 😮😢😭🤪😵‍💫😶

Thank you for talking about this. This does happen. I have heard I from other survivors in my peer support groups and from friends too. I think it's a lot more common than we believe it is. This happened to me too, but they didn't come back till I was early 30s. Its when I realized I was born and raised in a cult and this was part of what made that experience so traumatic for me. I have done so much somatic work with a wonderful coach, and in support groups, and I am doing so much better now.

I ask myself it all the time. Did I make it up? But I remember it.

i still deal with this sometimes. i was often taken to other states for the abuse and had zero memory of travel conciously. found out i was routinely travelling acrossed country for the trafficking and then being taken back home afterward. it was hard to wrap my head around but my wife was with me the whole time and saw everything i saw. the things the brain can hide are remarkable.

I also told myself my situation was, "not that bad," for almost six years. I've always joked that my brain has different departments, but I truly was just shutting it in a box.

In so sorry you experienced all of that. Personally, I feel like my memories have taken about 10 years to fully resurface. I relive it all, but now I feel like what happened 10 years ago affects me the most here lately. I always told myself in the moment that I could have it way worse (I still do when I’m going through hard things). When I finally “woke up” and realized the gravity of what has happened to me I had a really hard time coping. Luckily therapy and meds are a huge help, but unfortunately even taking meds is hard because of past trauma. Thank you for sharing your story. And if nobody else tells you this today, I’m proud of you and I believe you. Be kind to younger you today 🫂
