@compositionexplained: Fallen Angel (1847) Alexandre Cabanel 📍 Musée Fabre, Montpellier, France Why is the Devil crying? For centuries, artists painted Satan as a horrifying, horned monster. But Alexandre Cabanel did something entirely different. He painted Lucifer as he originally was: the most beautiful and perfect angel ever created by God. The painting captures the exact second after he was cast out of Heaven. The tear running down his cheek is not a sign of repentance or sorrow. It is the sting of wounded pride. His reddened eyes burn with pure, concentrated hatred. He crosses his arms in absolute defiance, refusing to surrender his dignity even in defeat. His terrifying plan? In this moment of silent fury, Lucifer realizes that he cannot defeat his Creator directly. Instead, he will take revenge by destroying God's newest, most beloved creation: humanity. The fall of man begins right here, in the shadow of this single tear. 👉 Follow @compositionsexplained for vivid stories and hidden meanings in classical art.

All because he wanted to be the reason why he was great, not be handed everything by god, he said “I want to be able to make something of myself” and god replied “you’ll never be anything without me, so stop trying.”
