One of my favorite parts of teaching first grade is watching students build their confidence as readers 🥹📚 This week we officially started Success for All, our phonics curriculum! In first grade, we do things a little differently because instead of teaching phonics in one whole-group setting, students are grouped by their DIBELS data and work with different teachers based on their current reading needs. In my group, I have some developing readers who are still working on letter sounds, so today we went back to the foundations. We reviewed the letter, the sound, and the phrase that goes with it, practiced the movement, identified uppercase and lowercase forms, and brainstormed letters and pictures that have the target sound. And I LOVE how hands-on phonics can be. We’re constantly going back, practicing, thinking, moving, listening, and connecting sounds to letters. The phonics portion of our lesson is about 15–20 minutes, followed by about 25 minutes of shared stories where we continue applying those skills in context. I honestly wish I had videos like this when I was a beginning teacher because sometimes you don’t need another explanation of WHAT to teach… you need to actually SEE what it can look like in a real classroom. 🤍 So if you’re a new teacher, learning phonics, or teaching developing readers, I hope this gives you a little glimpse into what it can look like! #teacher #teachersoftiktok #teachertok #teaching #phonics
