I had to push my husband… I knew our dog, Ace, was declining tremendously. I knew for months that it was time. My husband was in denial. He finally said, “you can take him today”. And I swear he was sooo much better at peace once he was gone. 13 years was a long time for him. I did get him a yummy breakfast sandwich and my kids were there while he passed…. It’s not easy.

My dog had to get put down because of cancer. She told us „he could have a little more time but he would suffer.” My dad was all alone and had to make this decision himself. And he still thinks it’s his fault that we all lost our dog. And no one could say goodbye to him because everyone was working or in school. But we all know, it wasn’t my dad’s fault. I miss my dog sm.

I have a terrible guilt that I may have done it too soon. Everyone around me says he was ready, but I keep thinking I could have given him a few more weeks or even months. I almost scrolled past this because I’m so terrified to have it confirmed that I was selfish, that I just didn’t want to deal with all his conditions (blind, deaf, senile, arthritis, rotting teeth, incontinence…) Writjng it all out makes it look kind of obvious that he was ready, but … he could still kiss my nose. He could get excited when he realized I’d come home after being gone for a couple of hours. The guilt is crushing 💔

The hardest thing I had to do is make that decision. She was a 15 yr old shitzu. Thank goodness I had a wonderful vet that helped me thru the awful process. I know I made the right decision but it is always in my mind did I do the right thing. Yes I did. She didn’t have to suffer another day😢❤️‍🩹

that day came last February. it was 3 Am and I was lying on the floor with him and crying. I asked him "are you ready to go?" and he lifted his head up and looked so deeply into my eyes I knew he understood. I am still not over it and I dont think I will be. he was 16 and my soul dog. I miss him every day

II think the reason people struggle is because when your animal is having a good day, and they like their old self, how can you take them in. It feels like killing them instead of a merciful action. And you don’t want them to be scared and they will be on that day cos they happy and feeling good and alert. Well that’s what I think. But when they not doing ok it’s merciful and a release for them. And they not scared

I have an 11-year old diabetic Boston that lost his eyesight back in March and had a major hypoglycemia event in mid July. He currently has a rod bacteria ear infection and can’t have standard treatment due to the said diabetes. We have spent double digit thousands on his care in that time. Despite that, he’s happy, plays, and loves eating and sunbathing. We can’t find anything catastrophic to say “this is it.” The waiting for something “big” to happen that cant be an easy fix like an eye drop, antibiotic, or change of insulin is honestly devastating.

I said goodbye to my 16 year old GSD in February. Now that I am 6 months out I realize that I waited months too long. The anticipatory grief was killing me. Saying goodbye to him was one of the hardest things I’ve ever been through. I still replay it in my mind; did I hug him enough? Did I kiss him at the end? Did he hear me? It’s torturous.

This gave me peace of only for a moment I had to make the devastating decision to say goodbye to my 18 year-old boy. He was good until he wasn’t and I didn’t hesitate, but that does not alleviate the pain. I cry every single day and it’s been over a year. Thank you for your reassuring words.❤️‍🩹

I had to put my 5 year old king german shepherd down after finding out that a tumor burst in either his kidney or spleen. when picking up his ashes I got a hand written note from the veterinary doctor on staff that night saying I made the right decision along with a packet of wild flowers.

having to pick the day was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. he was still of right mind but his body was giving up on him. he would never tell me. he would be here forever if he could.

Thank you for this. I am currently dealing with the nightmare of anticipatory grief. I know the time for me to start thinking about "when's the right time" is just around the corner.

Can you talk about grief in the remaining pets. We lost one of our huskies last week, and his littermate brother won’t eat and is so sad. I’m trying to give him special treats & love to cheer him up, and it isn’t working. I don’t want to lose him too!

This is long sorry. May 7th of this year I had to let go of my 16 year old soul mate. I took her to the vet because I noticed she was struggling to stand on tile. Completely clean bill of health. Just old, which made it harder. I slept on the floor with her every night, she would often yelp in pain in her sleep. I feel so guilty for letting her struggle for a month after that vet visit, I was so selfish that I carried her down stairs into the grass and held her up to go to the bathroom. May 7th I noticed her breathing was quickening and she looked at me as if to say “I’m so sorry but I need your help” my vet came to my home within the hour to medicate and walk my Luna to the bridge. I still cry at random I can almost feel her at times. She raised me through my hardest moments I’ll miss her for the rest of my life. 🌈

You have always reminded me so much of my girls' vet. She loves my dogs as much as I do and she was there with me, and my boys, just 7 weeks ago. She immediately hugged me and told me she was so sorry. Thank you for being you!

My vet kept reassuring me that when I had to put my cocker down, he appeared to bounce back, that it was pre death euphoria. She said she would send me home if I was making the wrong choice, but in a week I wouldn’t recognize my sweet boy.
