I wish people knew that thousands more wild horses than the 3,700 reported in the New York Times article are going to slaughter every single year. Reservation horses and US Forest Service horses (who are all American wild horses as well) are excluded from the 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act which legally “protects” wild horses and because of that they have zero federal protection!! They’re unbranded, untracked, and no one usually cares to try to save them. EXCEPT US. Nirvana is home to over 600 wild horses rescued out of the slaughter pipeline and a large percentage of those were rounded up off of US Forest Service Land and Reservations across the West. If you think the helicopters the BLM uses are bad…. You should see how some of these horses are rounded up. The rate of injury and death is far higher than even BLM round ups. USFS and Reservation wild horses are just as important and deserve just as much attention as the BLM mustangs who have received so much news coverage lately!! September 4th - 9th we are headed back into the slaughter pipeline at the Bowie TX Auction owned by the largest exporter of horses to Mexico for slaughter. He bids on every horse. Every horse he ends up with… ships across the border to slaughter.
