I really agree with this explanation. To me, “performative” in the negative sense is when the display doesn’t match the belief or behaviour. Wearing trans colours because you genuinely support trans people is visible allyship; wearing them without actually supporting trans people would be performative.

This 👏 It’s not performative to openly support your trans kids or friends, it’s not performative to wear T-shirts or badges or raise money or support trans lives. It’s performative to do so when the intention is purely for self interest and attention. The biggest problem people are those who talk about their trans kids without permission, to make their struggles and issues with own without any actual consent or real lived experience of those issues themselves. If anyone cis is reading this, PLEASE wear the T-shirt, PLEASE wear the badge, PLEASE know we need allies who are actively supporting not only trans people in their own lives but all of us 🏳️⚧️

See this is what I don’t like about things. Misgender, wrong pronouns, inauthentic? Before anyone gets offended, try and understand the persons intentions!
