@raisingkidsbetter: Notice what all 9 have in common. Every one was harder for me than for him. Because doing it for him took 30 seconds. Watching him fumble took 20 minutes and a small dose of my own discomfort. The 20 minutes at 5 is what the 30 seconds at 15 is built on. That is the trade nobody warned me about, and the one I'm glad I took. #parentinghacks #mom #kids

As a teacher, we see your child and we see the children of the parents arguing in the comment. We also see their grades. Their growth. Their trajectory. We see their acceptance letters. Their job offers. Their future families. Thank you for parenting him.

I think one of the most important things a parent can do is prepare their child to eventually live confidently without them. Teach them, guide them, and be there when they need you, but also give them the space to make mistakes, learn from them, and figure things out on their own. ❤️Being a good parent isn’t about hovering over every decision—it’s about giving your child the tools, wisdom, and confidence to make their own decisions while knowing they’ll always have someone in their corner.

i made the snacks carried the bag and spoke if my son felt he couldn't and at 16 he is a independent happy young man that knows his mum will be there for him when he needs me. so you do you and I will do me.

Pendulums swing on these issues. A happy medium is likely about finding a balanced approach. Teaching independence and resilience is critical. Requiring it too early or too relentlessly can create hyper-independence and an unhealthy relational disconnect from parents and family in adulthood. Be careful.

I had my 5 year old co-sign on the mortgage, cut the grass and run with scissors. He has to learn. Tomorrow he starts at chipotle.

Being an adult is the hardest most difficult thing to navigate. I let my child enjoy the tiny portion of life that you get to actually not worry or stress about 🥰

Yeah number 5 doesn’t exactly work when your kid has an executive functionin disorder like adhd. Even grown adults can’t do number 5 effectively.

I raised mine the way my Dad raised me. He always said "I'll let you fall on grass. I'll even let you fall on concrete. But, I'll never let you fall off a cliff". You have to let kids experience the world or the world will experience a disaster of an adult.

I honestly thought these were normal things, but my kids were in team sports at 4 and 5 so they knew about packing their own sports bags (ice hockey), my son was making his own French toast at 7 yrs old, and grilled cheese. My daughter forgot her ice skates once. I made her wear rental skates. She never forgot them again.🤣 My son had a conflict with another boy in the neighborhood at 7 yrs old, I never got involved, I watched 4 other neighborhood 7 yr old boys stick up for my son and take care of the bully. Never made snacks for either of my kids. They knew where everything was, and they helped themselves. Now my kids are 21 & 29, and my son is about to be a father himself in a few days.😁

One gazillion percent. All I will say is, my son at 25 makes more money than me. My daughter at 21 makes more than my wife. AND THEY ARE HAPPY WITH THEIR CAREERS! They found their way on their own!!!!

When you do everything for your kids you are teaching them they are not capable of doing it themselves

#10- order your own food in a restaurant. Teaches confidence- decent behavior in public atmospheres- reading and understanding a menu- understand that the people serving you are not only servers- they are humans and being polite goes a long way. My kids was ordering his own food at 5 😂 telling the waiter and waitress "Aunty/Uncle- this looks yummy- may I have this please?!" He could read well but pictures went a long way.

Best parenting advice ever. NEVER do for the child what the child can do for itself. we are raising adults.

I have a 29yr old married son who I did everything for. After college he had an absolute breakdown that he is just starting to come out of bc adulting is hard. Seeing the mistakes I made, I changed how I raised my now 12 yr old daughter. She is fierce and so independent. I have guilt everyday of the injustice I caused for him. Thank god for his wife but I also feel guilt for her. She is also paying for my mistakes. Good news is he is good at taking the note and tried really hard. They will make it but I crippled them.

The only thing I do not agree with is a 15 year old making their own dr appointments bc idk about yalls but all our drs offices require parent guardian .. most of the others I do with my kids but did not start doing at age 5

I understand them learning things for themselves, but they are also only little once. Some of these things I feel are too much to expect a 5 year old to do. Also sounds to me like the kid is being required to do a parents’ job. Seems like you need a restful vacation.

🤷‍♀️You do you. My parents woke me up everyday until I went off to college. And I got a BA, a masters and a successful career. I'm not willing to let my kid be late to school everyday because I value her education.
