🚨 TRUMP’S FALSE CLAIMS ABOUT CANADA: HIS WORD IS WORTHLESS 🇨🇦 Donald Trump has spent the past 18 months attacking Canada with a relentless stream of false, exaggerated and misleading claims about our economy, trade, military and sovereignty. This isn't an occasional mistake. The Washington Post documented 30,573 false or misleading claims during Trump's first presidency, reaching roughly 39 a day in his final year. That record matters because Trump's word is worthless, his promises are worthless, and his signature is worthless when it comes to guaranteeing what he will honour tomorrow. Here are just some of his claims about Canada: 🇨🇦 “Canada's unemployment is 10% and rapidly rising.” FALSE. Canada's unemployment rate was 6.4% in July 2026, and it fell for the third consecutive month while Canada added roughly 75,100 jobs. 🇨🇦 “Canada does 95% of its business with America.” FALSE. The latest full-year data shows 71.7% of Canadian merchandise exports went to the U.S. in 2025, while exports to non-U.S. markets jumped 17.2%. 🇨🇦 “Canada's tariffs are causing America's trade deficit.” FALSE AND MISLEADING. The U.S. imports enormous quantities of Canadian crude oil, gas and other resources because American businesses need them. And roughly 97% of U.S. agricultural exports to Canada are tariff-free under existing trade arrangements. 🇨🇦 “Canada doesn't buy American farm products.” FALSE. Canada is one of the largest markets in the world for U.S. agricultural exports, buying billions of dollars of American beef, pork, poultry, grains, fruits, vegetables and processed food. 🇨🇦 “Canada has some of the highest tariffs in the world.” FALSE. Canada is not a uniquely protectionist outlier. The vast majority of Canada-U.S. trade has historically been tariff-free under NAFTA/USMCA. 🇨🇦 “Canada has 200%+ dairy tariffs.” MISLEADING. Certain products imported above negotiated tariff-rate quotas can face high over-quota tariffs. But Trump routinely presents those rates as though every American dairy product entering Canada gets hit with 200%+ tariffs. And the system he attacks was part of USMCA, negotiated and signed by Trump's own administration. 🇨🇦 “America has a $200-billion trade deficit with Canada.” FALSE. The U.S. goods deficit with Canada was approximately US$46 billion in 2025, nowhere remotely close to $200 billion. The U.S. also runs a services surplus with Canada. 🇨🇦 “America subsidizes Canada by $200 billion.” FALSE. There is no $200-billion annual American cheque to Canada. Trump has repeatedly distorted trade and defence figures to manufacture this narrative. 🇨🇦 “Canada doesn't allow American banks.” FALSE. American banks and financial institutions have operated in Canada for decades. Canadian regulation is not an American-bank ban. 🇨🇦 “Canada basically has no military.” ABSURD. Canada is a founding NATO member, participates in NORAD and has fought alongside the United States in numerous wars and operations. Canada's military is smaller than America's — obviously — but it absolutely exists and contributes to continental defence. 🇨🇦 “Canada is constantly surrounded by Chinese and Russian ships.” FALSE AND WILDLY EXAGGERATED. Canada monitors Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic and surrounding waters, but there is no factual basis for portraying Canada as perpetually surrounded by enemy fleets. 🇨🇦 “Canada is responsible for America's fentanyl crisis.” MISLEADING. Canada's northern border is not the principal source of fentanyl entering the United States. Canadian authorities actively work with U.S. agencies against trafficking and organized crime. 🇨🇦 “Canadians want to become the 51st state.” FALSE. Canadian polling has repeatedly shown overwhelming opposition to joining the United States. 🇨🇦 “Canada would collapse without America.” FALSE. Canada is a G7 economy, major energy producer, agricultural exporter and critical-minerals powerhouse.
