@alignandthrive.therapy: Before you ask another question, pause. Instead of filling the silence or throwing another question at them, get curious about what’s happening in the room. Try: • “I’ve noticed I’ve been asking a lot of questions today, and I’m wondering what it’s like for you to be here with me right now.” •“I’m curious if this feels different from how you usually communicate with people.” •“I’m noticing it feels hard to get much from you today. What are you noticing?” • “Part of me wonders if you’re waiting for me to lead this conversation.” •“What makes it hard to know what to say right now?” • ”If you didn’t have to give me the ‘right’ answer, what might you say?” • “What are you noticing as I ask you these questions?” Sometimes one-word answers can be protection, uncertainty, difficulty accessing emotions, fear of judgment, people-pleasing, disengagement, or simply not knowing what therapy is supposed to look like. I’d ask myself: Is this how my client interacts in other areas of their life, or is this something that is happening specifically in our therapeutic relationship? And sometimes your urge to keep asking questions is information, too. Get curious about this^ 😅 Notice what is happening between you and the client. Slow down enough to explore it. If you’re struggling to get deeper with clients, check the link of my bio for my DEEPER framework. Are there any other questions you’d add to this list? 👇 #mentalhealththerapist #supervision #clinicalskills #therapist #healing

Sit in the silence and/or I like to ask what would make this a good session for you or something along those lines.

Believe it or not, a great game of Uno will have them telling you more than if you asked a direct question. and I do this with 10-year-olds all the way up to my 30 and 40-year-old clients. anytime someone puts down a draw for they have to tell you a feeling or situation per color. so for example if they put down a draw for and the color is red they have to tell you a time recently when they were angry. I provide services virtually but this works just as good whether it's in person or virtual.

As rapport has been built. I've asked clients if there is anything they feel like they are avoiding talking about. I clarify that it is just a question to help go deeper and not an accusation that they are. I've had success with it!

What needs your attention today? What does your head and heard need today? What feels most important to focus on today?

What is the function of “I don’t know”? Is it that they don’t want to talk or do they really not know and need support identifying needs and what is important? If they don’t want to talk, I offer coloring, sand tray, taking a walk. If they don’t know, we clarify whether they don’t know what to expect in therapy or if they have learned that their needs aren’t important. Their I don’t know can actually give us a lot of information.

I sometimes just allow the silence. I recently had a review from a client at my job that said I was really nice, but that while she was struggling with her depression in coming to session with nothing to talk about, she felt like I did not know how to lead her.. which was a little disheartening being a new client. I don’t like when sessions feel like a job interview and fighting to come up with things to ask. This type of questions definitely help.

Maybe stop trying to connect with words at that point, meet them where they are at and try connecting with breathwork instead.

Someone tag me when there’s answers! I have someone who is doing this and it’s been so difficult. We’ve starting passing journals for review before the beginning of session with prompts and that helped somewhat

I like to ask about the short answers directly. Why do you think it’s difficult to talk about this in more depth? Is there something holding you back? What comes up for you when we start talking about this?
