I hate milestone so much! its just made to slow down leveling and not reward the players! there is no other reason for it.

This suddenly gave me an idea, if a player kills someone with no valid reason (the DM determines if it was valid) then the players gain a point, while they have these points they cannot level up, sense that is the number one desired thing in dnd, this encourages players not to murderhobo, there also needs to be a way to remove these points

the way I'm planning on doing level ups in the campaign is to have my players convince me in what way their characters have grown after the session. my hope is that it will keep my players attention on their characters and the campaign itself rather than just being moving from one fight to the next

I've had a DM make innocents give negative XP (dependant on how important they are to the group), it pretty much ended murder hobo-ing

alright people im gonna be a dm for my first campaign and I was thinking that I'll be only giving xps from combats... like mapped combats? am I wrong?

assuming the familys each have 2 children and the tavern staff consists of 10 people, thats a Total of 26 Commoners, so they get 260 exp in 5e. thats not even enough for 1 character to go to lvl 2. + they got a massive bounty now.

My dm moved away from xp after we killed a lich as a low level party, which would have given us each at least 5 to 8 levels. We had him move away from milestones after we kept thinking we had done enough to level up but he had specific (ambiguous to us) milestones. Now we just do every 2 to 3 sessions. Works great for everyone.

I don't about 5e, but older editions made am explicit point in the DMG about how XP should only be awarded when players were actually in danger and if the PCs would have learned (ie gotten experience) from the encounter. Precisely to avoid murderhoboism I barely play 5e these days though, can anyone confirm if this is actually explained in the modern rules?

yes you gained 350xp from combat but unfortunately lost 530xp from role-playing penalties now you lose a total of 180 xp, lost favor with your deity, and witnesses have informed local authorities

Well… commoner awards you with 10 xp… 4 families and the entire staff of the tavern would be 20-25 commoners. That results in 200-250 xp. I’m afraid it’s not enough to level up even at level 1. You’d be short for 50-100 xp 😅 probably try to throw to the mix few tavern guests 😉
