The answer is: you can’t. And at some point, we have to stop trying. In my conversation with Linda Brand, we talk about reputational warfare and what happens when someone sets out to control the narrative about who you are. We can spend years trying to correct every lie, defend every accusation, explain ourselves to every person who has heard a distorted version of the story—and still never get ahead of it. So eventually, we have to go live our lives. If someone hears something terrible about you and chooses to believe it without ever coming to you, asking a question, hearing your side, or using their own critical thinking skills, you cannot fix that for them. We’re moving quickly into an age where people are increasingly being told what to think instead of being taught how to think. And when someone is willing to condemn another human being based solely on what they’ve been told, without curiosity, conversation, or critical thought, that’s no longer simply a problem with your reputation. That’s a character problem—theirs. You don’t have to spend the rest of your life standing trial in the court of public opinion. Let them talk. Let them believe whatever they choose to believe. And then go build a life so authentically yours that you no longer need their version of you to change. Your job isn’t to control the narrative.
