What can we actually learn from Lindsay Clancy’s psychiatric treatment? It’s easy to look at a complicated medication history after the fact and say, “How did nobody see this coming?” But psychiatry doesn’t work with perfect information or perfect hindsight. In this video, I break down some of the clinical questions I think are worth asking — medication coordination, multiple prescribers, the role of the PMP, reassessing a patient whose symptoms continue to worsen, and the importance (and limitations) of collateral information. I’m not claiming to know exactly what happened in Lindsay’s treatment, and I wasn’t her psychiatrist. There are clearly details we simply don’t have access to. But I do think there’s value in asking what we can learn from a case like this, rather than simply deciding who was right or wrong. Because the goal of reviewing difficult cases shouldn't be blame.
