Darasa zikiisha, you did not go and rest. You went to work. Me and my best friend Eric were assigned the trenches. Manhole covers, penye sewage inaconnect, that was our department. St Mary's ikona ngombe. Ikona nguruwe. Everyone had a responsibility. Kuna wenye wanakata kuni. Kuna wenye wanaosha choo. Daily. Even Saturday. Form Two, we were given the pig unit. While boys in other schools were waking up kwenda kufanya preps, sisi tulikuwa tunaamka kwenda kufanya kazi. Change the sawdust. Fresh food. And if the pig is pregnant, that is now your personal problem. Form Three, nikajua kukamua ngombe. Inatoa 14 litres. Unakamua mpaka mikono inachoka. Sundays we had actual freedom. You leave, you handle yourself, you come back before roll call. They were treating us like men before we were men. And when someone treats you like an adult, you start behaving like one.
