There was a source that verified that the Doctor always assumed the same thing. Apologies but I can't remember which of the hundreds of Doctor Who sources it was. The Doctor always assumed it was a one way relationship, and that River was off galavanting about the universe while he truly was the one that loved her. If I remember the extended universe source, I'll drop it.
