@drtoddphillips: Christians, if the Bible is the objective moral standard that taught you slavery is wrong, show me where it says human beings should never own other human beings. The Old Testament regulates slavery and permits people to be bought and owned as property. The New Testament repeatedly instructs enslaved people to obey their masters and never simply abolishes the institution. And yet almost every Christian today believes owning another human being is morally wrong. I agree. But that moral conclusion required Christians to take broader principles like love of neighbor, human dignity, equality, and being made in the image of God, and allow those principles to govern the biblical passages that permit and regulate slavery. That is interpretation. That is negotiating with the text. #Exvangelical #Agnostic #Deconstruction #slaveryinthebible #BibleQuestions
It lays out rules for slaves based on what nationality the slaves are!!!!! How can Christians talk around this!

It's almost like the Bible is responsible for the racism that exists today. 🤷

Fair perspective. Here is another perspective. How the world functioned in those times vs how it functions now, plays a part in my understanding. People now have homes and food a plenty compared to back then, and opportunities are overwhelming. Modern day slavery exists for every human with a job and a boss. One must do as they are told to earn a wage to purchase things to provide for a livelihood. Those modern things, massive amounts of businesses and living spaces were simply not available within the historical context to which you are referring. Slavery was a means to have food, water, and shelter, by which now we have conveniences that allow us not to have to live with our bosses in order to have those things. Not condoning, but seeking to understand what this would have been like. Our understanding of slavery in the US is what creates a negative bias of how we view this, because people were mistreated exponentially.

God didn't endorse slavery it was part of the economic system. purpose and function of slavery mirrored other ancient Near Eastern societies, serving primarily as a social safety net for extreme poverty and a mechanism for handling international prisoners of war. Ancient Israel had no central banks, bankruptcy protections, or government social security programs. When a family faced catastrophic agricultural failure or absolute destitution, entering bondage was a strategy for physical survival

Its not that hard to debunk, but ok🤔.
I do have a question though, why is slavery bad if we are just evolved apes🤔?

The thing people often miss in the New Testament is that Paul specifically told Christian masters to treat their Christian slaves with respect because they have the same master in Christ and are equal through Christ. Paul doesn’t say treat all of your slaves with respect, he specified that Christian slaves should be respected. If Paul believed that non-believers weren’t equal to believers, then it’s safe to assume he didn’t care what happened with non-Christian slaves because he also thought non-believers would be punished during Christ’s imminent return (Paul thought Jesus was coming back within his lifetime).

When the Israelites enslave foreigners, it is endorsed by God. When the Israelites are enslaved by the Egyptians, every firstborn child is Egypt is killed as punishment.

yeah and one point needs correcting. byy the time of Jesus, jews were living under Roman rule and had themselves experienced centuries of domination by larger empires, so they weren't exactly an imperial power collecting conquered populations as slaves. But that doesn't erase Leviticus 25:44 to 46, which clearly permits ancient Israelites to acquire foreign slaves and pass them on as property. sooo the stronger argument is about different historical periods, not that jews never had slavery.
