A failed asylum seeker was arrested in possession of a knife, hatchet, hammer and a petrol can outside a school. Both Douk Deng was arrested after workmen confronted him at Edgar Wood Academy in Heywood, Greater Manchester, on 6 August last year. A member of the public earlier observed the 21-year-old south Sudanese national “behaving oddly” enroute to the school holding a petrol can, with a hammer attached to his belt. Deng was “mumbling” as he walked a “full circuit” of the secondary school which was closed to pupils for the summer. Builders working on the site called police. In CCTV footage released by Greater Manchester Police, Deng is seen kicking over a traffic cone, stamping on a road sign and appearing to wave at the workmen who approached him before police arrived. Officers are heard telling Deng to “stop there” and “get on the ground now”. Another officer is heard saying, “he does have a hammer with him as well. And a hatchet.” Deng, who was spotted at other schools a day earlier, also had a seven-inch knife. Deng, who has been refused asylum on three occasions, wanted to “create a scene for attention” to aid his cause, Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard. Sara Haque, defending, said her client’s actions were not “motivated by any desire to injury or harm any person”. She said it was a “bizarre and compulsive act” carried out at a time when Deng was “in deep distress having left Sudan and his family in traumatic circumstances”. Deng, who has a wife and children, was placed in multiple accommodation housing (HMO) on his arrival in the UK, the court was told and was unable to work because of his immigration status. Deng, of Heywood, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to a range of offences including criminal damage and possessing weapons and a knife in a public place and on school premises. Deng, who has been in custody for almost a year, was sentenced to two years in prison and told he must serve up to half his sentence in custody and the remainder on licence. Judge Bernadette Baxter said in her judgement that the Home Office should address Deng’s status in the UK.
