Can I ask for some advice. I have a border collie and for nearly 14 years he’s been perfect, he responds to me immediately, one command and he does it, excellent recall, good routine, he even knows to tell me when he’s done with our walk etc no food aggression/guarding, completely none reactive, he got attacked twice by a German Shepherd and didn’t react because I told him to leave it he laid down whilst I removed the shepherd from him. Apart from whining like a pigeon in the car he’s almost perfect. However the last few months he seems more sluggish/reluctant with response to request, his recall is starting to slip (I do wonder if maybe he’s losing some hearing because also if he goes a certain distance away when he does come back he doesn’t seem to realise I’ve carried on walking so he goes back to where I was before and just waits.) then Yesterday another border collie walked past in the field and he just kind of went for him, but not properly it was pure mouthing etc but never in 14 years have I ever whitnessed him even react to him being gone at let alone that. He was a 1 year old in tacked collie so was it just a dominance thing? He also a month ago started barking at our fence if next doors husky is out which is also so out of character. (he’s 14 but he’s still in perfect health, still very active etc you wouldn’t say he’s 14 if you met him)this change, Is it just age and he’s getting cantankerous ? Is it normal for dogs to switch behaviours like that as they get older? Can I fix this? Should I be changing anything? A video on changing behaviours in senior dogs would be amazing if you have time!

Yesss. One of the best things we taught our GSD was “settle”. This means go settle down somewhere, you’re not needed right now so go relax. This was 1000% more useful than “place” to us. Place still meant he was focused on us and waiting for the next command.

Teaching “gentle” and “enough” should be in every dogs vocab. We can deescalate our GSD in less than a second even during welcome excited play.

LOVE the “enough” command. All my dogs follow it. Both Jack Russell’s and a pit bull/heeler mix know if I say “enough” or “leave it” they immediately stop. 😁 I’ve had them pick up a dropped pill and “leave it” had them drop it out of their mouth.
