@kendraworth: Replying to @🥸 Here is part 2 of the conversation I had with my 3.5 YO after she hit her older sister & had a tantrum about her consequence. She was able to verbalize that she didn’t know what to do when she’s mad or sad, so we talked about other options and why hurting someone is not acceptable. Kids NEED consequences when they misbehave, but the consequence should never involve withdrawing your love, affection, and attention because children require all of those things to truly regulate. I do not give “time outs” as discipline because they make children feel rejected, unloved, and they end up not being able to focus on the actual lesson you’re trying to teach. Instead, I do “time ins” where my kids are removed from others, but I stay with them to help them calm down and process. The problem is if I’m alone, my kids who didn’t do anything wrong end up feeling rejected, so I started setting them up with a show (we’re a low screens house btw) while I stayed with whoever was getting a “time in.” I also started having my 3.5 YO earn a 30 minute show at the end of each day if she was able to go the whole day without hitting and kicking. This motivator combined with the redirections I talked about here have made a HUGE difference. She has only hit once in the last month since this happened and she did not get to earn a show that day because I ALWAYS follow through on consequences. This conversation was a real turning point for her & I hope seeing it helps other parents! Such a great example of acknowledging a child’s difficulty regulating while also encouraging them to accept the responsibility of getting older. A lot of adults still struggle with that concept!

BRAVO 👏 👏👏👏 you can still be a gentle parent even if you instill boundaries, consequences, and use a stern voice instead of fruity, permissive parenting

Your videos have helped my husband and I so much with our two year old as we begin navigating bigger feelings. He and I will sit and watch them together and just seeing the example had made such a difference for us. Thank you for taking the time to share! ❤️

I really appreciate this style and explanation! Do you have any books you could recommend that helped you learn these techniques? I regularly work with young kids who are sometimes dysregulated so I would really appreciate resources 🖤

Thank you so much for these videos. You have no idea how much these help when I wasn’t raised with emotional regulation and go straight to anger. It’s the majority of the reason I don’t feel I can handle a 4th child
