@sienna.reef: The way a child sees a controlling parent as protective is one of the saddest mind games there is. They grow up thinking control equals love. It takes years to unlearn that. They don't realise until they're older that "I'm just protecting you" was really "I need to control you." And by then, the damage is already done. To a child, a controlling parent feels like safety. My children are 30 & 28, and “vanished” into the alienation at 11 & 9. This post helped me understand why they never reached out as adults. My ex wife still keeps them in her “golden cage.” My son of 30 Lives with her even … so bizarre to me.
