@elementsrecruiter: If you’re a junior attorney and you hate your practice area, I’ve got one big piece of advice for you: GET OUT NOW. The longer you stay in a practice area you already know you don’t want, the harder it can become to pivot later. As a junior attorney, firms are much more likely to view you as adaptable, trainable and capable of growing into a new practice. But as you get more senior, that conversation starts to change. You may be viewed as more of a risk because the firm is wondering: Will you actually like this new practice area? Are you going to jump ship again? Are we paying a more senior salary for someone who is still junior in this specific type of work? And one more big factor: your experience starts branding you. The longer you stay in one lane, the more recruiters and firms begin to associate your résumé with that exact practice area, which can make breaking out of it much tougher. If you already know you’re miserable in your current practice, don’t assume you have to “stick it out” for five years.
