It’s a known procedural risk, especially in curved or calcified canals with difficult anatomy. But a separated file does not automatically mean the tooth is failing or dangerous. What matters is the overall disinfection of the canal system, the location of the fragment, and the quality of the treatment around it. And more importantly, the goal is always to minimize the risk in the first place. This happened to me during my root canal. My dentist tried to get it out and couldn’t and showed me X-ray of it. She said if I want I could have her stop the procedure and go to specialist to have them extract it. But she promised me that it being stuck there will cause no harm if I leave it. She said it’s just like someone having surgery where they have screws and stuff in bones etc. she told me with confidence I’d be just fine

I’ve had this happen twice, one of the times being at the endodontist. Each time, they ended up pulling the tooth.

I had a hot tooth during a crown prep and my general dentist did an emergency root canal… he broke the file… mind you he didn’t even use a rubber dam. I didn’t trust him to finish this so I saw an endo who removed it. It took him two hours. 😭
