In the middle of the performance, the set breaks on stage. The critics destroy the opera. Months later, his mother died. Barber disappeared in the Alps. Drinking, barely composing a note. He was 57 years old. It was there, at rock bottom, that he returned to a melody that already existed: the one he had written at 26 years old, the Adagio for Strings, from 1936. He didn't write new music. He barely changed a note of the score. He did one thing only: he clothed that old melody with the Latin text from the Catholic mass. "Miserere nobis" — have mercy on us — is a plea that the mass repeats for centuries, with no owner, spoken by any mouth that prays. In Barber's voice, after the public failure and his mother's death, that plea is no longer for everyone. He is praying for mercy for himself.
