There’s a TikTok I saw a while ago about a girl who wrote a poem about making tea. It was her favorite part of her work day. Getting up to put the kettle on boil and waiting around for the water to be ready chatting away with passing coworkers and then eventually going back to her work space. But then they got a hot water tap. It made her having hot tea instantaneous. She loved it for a few days and was excited to have instant tea and to not have to wait for the kettle. Eventually the novelty faded and she realized she missed those conversations while she waited for the kettle. Missed the simple process of just making tea. It was relaxing and thoughtful, more than she gave it credit for or realized until it became so convenient that it lost that meaning. Things are too streamlined now. Meaning traded for convenience because we think that convenience and having things instantly available is so gratifying and fulfilling. But is it really? We have everything available at the tip of our fingers but in-spite of having the ability to connect with the far reaches of the world, we’ve never been so disconnected to eachother and to ourselves.

I've been thinking this for months now, but people rarely resonated with me on this one. More efficiency CAN only give you more time, when you're the only one gaining it. Glad to finally effing hear someone else bringing this up!

9-5 is not the workday. it is 8 to 5, with a 1 hour unpaid lunch, plus 2 hours commute. so from 7a-6pm I am not even available for lifing. then I still have to cook, clean and maintain home and health

Workers are never GIVEN time back. Workers TAKE time back. Reform happens through unrelenting demands by workers in unison, while governments and companies try to quell the uprising.

It is unsustainable and we are collectively allowing all of it. The power of the people is greater than the people in power.
