@shaan.u: The Count of Monte Cristo is probably the least hateable classic ever written. Maybe “litslop” = peak #BookTok #classics #BookRecommendations #thecountofmontecristo

Bro you haven’t heard? If the prose doesn’t take 3-4 rereads per line to comprehend it’s slop

i will hear NO Dumas slander, especially on his masterpiece. BIG on the it’s as deep as you want to go. i read it twice 10 years apart, and it was like reading an entirely different book. it’s a dream of mine to turn it into a show

Everyone’s just so pretentious on TikTok, it’s insane. Whether it comes to fashion, music, art, education, or even books, everyone is always trying to act like they’re better than everyone else. People just don’t enjoy things; they have to prove that what they enjoy makes them a cooler and more “niche” person. SMH

I'll never understand how so many have come to regard straightforward prose as bad. The epitome of intelligence is to explain simply.

Also no one talks about how the penguin classics translation IS SO GOOD!!!! So accessible and easy to understand. I couldnt get thru Russian lit translations by P&V. so i gotta give Robin Buss credit for his excellent work on Monte Cristo

Knocking this book for the prose is so fake. First off, that’s the translator’s doing, not the book itself. Buss made it accessible, it’s a tradeoff. And his prose isn’t even weak or oversimplified, it’s decently nuanced and challenging. Not the trickiest prose out there but it’s not superficial either

I read it cause you were praising it endlessly and it was just as great. I was intimidated cause I wasn't reading for a bit and this was my reentrance and it was just as if not better than you made it out to be. genuinely peak literature

when dudes say shit like that, I am 110% positive they read the words but took no meaning and did nothing but surface level read the entire peace with almost zero understanding of characters, themes, motivations. etc

the funniest part of the whole tweet is that it came from user “Based Dostojevski” as if most of our good man Fyodor’s books aren’t melodramatic soap operas themselves. bro loved a love triangle and a messy family

Based Dostoyevsky is a username Brian Griffin would write. This is also a tweet Brian Griffin would write. When I was like 14 I larped knowing about literature just like this. This is probably a teenager tbh.
