@cbsmiami: A state grand jury found the DeSantis administration "misappropriated" $10 million in taxpayer money when it diverted funds from a Medicaid settlement into the Hope Florida Foundation, saying the money was ultimately used to fund political activities. The money came from a $67 million settlement with Centene over prescription drug overbilling and was supposed to reimburse Florida taxpayers. Instead, $10 million went to Hope Florida before being distributed to two organizations and eventually to political action committees and the Republican Party of Florida, which used the funds in the campaign against a 2024 marijuana legalization amendment. The grand jury found insufficient evidence to charge anyone criminally but said taxpayer money was misused for political purposes. The report identified current Attorney General James Uthmeier as a key figure and said former Attorney General Ashley Moody was aware of and authorized the settlement. Gov. Ron DeSantis has denied involvement and called the allegations a "hoax." The grand jury said the rushed settlement and lack of legislative oversight raised serious concerns, noting that the $10 million reached political committees within weeks. It recommended laws requiring state settlement funds to go into the General Fund and establishing clear rules, tracking and consequences for the use of taxpayer money.
