My hottest take is that the meth epidemic is much more widespread, and has a bigger impact on families and communities than the opioid epidemic but is completely ignored.

I used to be a substance abuse with the stimulant in question, so I can share my experiences with driving. 1. It caused me to feel very on edge and as if I were swerving in and out of the lines even though I wasn’t. (I believe it was the jitters that it gave, so the jerking sensations in my hands gave the impression I was swerving the wheel even though I wasn’t) 2. I was very paranoid of other cars hitting me or being a police officer. I never dealt with paranoia unless I was behind the wheel because I felt both dangerous and in danger. 3. Even though I was hyper vigilant, I do feel I was more inclined to make reckless driving decisions to avoid perceived threats. Please note though that I recognize driving under the influence was a poor decision and one I regret making but I’m grateful I never harmed anyone or myself. I am now sober, have a masters degree, and succeeding in life 💖

How are you supposed to drive well when every car is a cop car and there's shadow people running all over the freeway?

you should definitely worry about amphetamine driving- they can pass out from exhaustion very easily

Wonder how many of the people in the "taking makes me feel normal" group have something like undiagnosed ADHD where an effect like the would make legitimate medical sense

My good friend died a few months ago from a lady driving while high. Hit her head on going 55 mph. She died on impact.

A lot of drug tests don’t distinguish between methamphetamines and amphetamines. For instance in the hospital. They are usually only testing for amphetamines which could be prescribed Adderall or could be the “byproduct” of meth breaking down in your system over time. It depends on the kind of test and the timing of the last time the substance was ingested as well as route of administration (oral, smoke, iv)

Could it possibly work giving meth addicts something like Adderall to help them come off it? Kinda like how we give opiate addicts suboxone?

In Australia they do random road side saliva drug tests. Police set up a Booze/Drug Bus, there's multiple police officers testing nearly everyone who drives through it, for either alcohol, drugs or both. First offence is 6 month loss of licence.

(trauma dump warning I guess) I have personal experience from being 9 in the back seat in the middle of the night. My mom was very “focused” on driving but had no destination I guess. Did not respond to me saying we were going in circles, ended up on a long road who knows where. Alerting her to the fact that she was drifting off the road made her suddenly just jerk the wheel all the way over in panic apparently. Anyway we spun out and the minivan was in the ditch totaled. She just kept hitting the gas over and over but it had rained I guess so the wheels just spun. Someone happened to be driving by thankfully and stopped to call authorities. I think I had a bruise from the seatbelt but was otherwise physically unharmed.

I think a study comparing meth to adderall would be more in tune with today's society.
