Crikey Moses, check out this absolute whop-donger, legends! 🐸 Amber was out in the paddock pulling a few weeds when she accidentally uncovered the burrow of this magnificent Eastern Banjo Frog — one of the biggest frogs we get in our area and something we don’t see too often! These chunky little legends are burrowing frogs… basically the wombat version of the frog world! 😂 They spend plenty of time tucked away underground and often emerge after heavy rain. Ashlee was absolutely stoked to get a close look at this big fella. Because its burrow had been disturbed and it was left exposed, we brought it inside, kept it safe until nightfall, then released it near the dam with plenty of damp ground and cover around it. Eastern Banjo Frogs can grow up to around 8 centimetres long and are also known as Pobblebonks. They get that brilliant name from the males’ deep “bonk, bonk” call, which sounds like someone plucking a banjo string! They breed in dams, ponds and stream pools, laying their eggs in large floating rafts of foam. Their tadpoles can reach about seven centimetres long and may take four or five months to develop — sometimes much longer in colder areas. The adults mainly feed on insects. What an absolute ripper!
