If I recall correctly this was supposedly found by Cope during the bone wars. Even putting aside the very real possibility that he overestimated its dimensions in the rush to publish, since their rivalry didn’t exactly encourage thorough research, are we sure he wasn’t just fucking with Marsh? Even if he couldn’t prove it, giving his rival the idea that he might find more of the longest vertebrate on the planet might still get under Marsh’s skin.
