Some additional information on fasting: it's still very common in Europe, especially for Eastern Orthodox Christians, to hold Easter Fast, Christmas Fast, The Fast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, AND the Fast of the Dormition of the Mother of God. Eating fish is also not allowed for most of the fasting period. The "Allowance of Fish" is only on "Holy Days" such as important religious saint days, or on Sundays. There is also an entire industry of lent products: vegan pate, vegan cheese, etc. Lastly, it's common for very religious people to have days in which they hold a Black Fast, where they only drink water, no food is allowed at all. It's most common during Holy Week and particularly on Good Friday.

In my country (Poland) the biggest snail species is actually not native to this part of Europe. it was brought over by french monks and then escaped containment. so yes, snail is fish too
